Southern Pacific flat car 56462 transports giant strawberries. The postcard is numbered 1891 and was made in America. The same publisher, Edward H. Mitchell, issued a similar series of gigantic fruit images for the fruit and vegetables of Washington state.

Exterior view of PFE refrigerator car No. 81, Class R 30 1, built in 1906 and 1907 by the American Car and Foundry Company. This car is among the earliest PFE wood-sheathed ice-cooled refrigerator cars. These cars were painted dark olive for express service on passenger trains.

CP box car 36903 is an early ventilated fruit car built for the Central Pacific in the 1880s and modernized soon after the turn of the century. Air-flow cooled the contents of the car. Ventilated cars were later replaced by refrigerated cars. This photograph was taken at the Sacramento Shops.

This view may have been photographed in Louisiana but the consist and the community participation was no doubt similar to California excursions.

Exterior side view of Southern Pacific of Mexico stock car 76701 photographed in Los Angeles. The car was built by the American Car & Foundry Company, outshopped in May of 1900. SPNM merged into SP in 1902. Stock cars were used for the transportation of livestock, equipped with a roof, slatted sides and side doors, single or double deck, and frequently with feed and water troughs.

Central Pacific Railroad 30-ton, 36-foot long wood box car, No. 70211, Class CS 14A. The photograph is most likely taken at the Sacramento Shops, circa 1902, when the car was new. Class 14A exhibits certain improvements over Class CS 14, including the addition of a small lumber door on the end.
