Record Research was founded in 1955 by Leonardt Kunstadt, unofficially as an extension of 'Record Changer' magazine. It featured discographical research into record labels and series and dates and personnel, but also frequently spread into editorials and opinions, subject discographies, historical and biographical research, and even a long-running comic panel.

Between 1889 and 1896 the Columbia Phonograph Company of Washington D.C. pioneered the recording and sale of entertainment recordings. This discography presents the known recordings from the company's founding in January 1889 to the establishment of a permanent numbering system in August 1896.
