Bora Laskin Law Library - Casebooks

The Bora Laskin Law Library Casebooks Project offers a tool for browsing the collection of casebooks used for the study and teaching of law at the University of Toronto Law School. Going back to 1942 and authored by law professors at the top of their field, this is one of the largest sets of legal casebooks in Canadian legal education history, capturing the most significant case law at the time of each casebook’s publication.

DESCRIPTION

The Bora Laskin Law Library Casebooks Project offers a tool for browsing the collection of casebooks used for the study and teaching of law at the University of Toronto Law School. Going back to 1942 and authored by law professors at the top of their field, this is one of the largest sets of legal casebooks in Canadian legal education history, capturing the most significant case law at the time of each casebook’s publication.

The casebook method, used predominantly in North America to teach law, requires students to analyze the language of legal judgments in order to determine what law was applied in the decision and how the court applied it. Rather than laying out the legal doctrine in a particular area of study, a casebook contains excerpts from legal cases, sometimes supplemented with excerpts from law review articles, editorial notes and other related materials providing the background for the cases.

The project is nearing its completion. When complete, this set will count over 5,000 casebooks. Each record stored here contains images of title pages, tables of content, notes, editorials and any additional original content provided by the author. The full original print copies of these materials are retained by the University of Toronto Libraries and may be requested on demand.
