Think about the current laser designation capability used to direct precision-guided munitions (PGMs) to destroy an enemy target. Now, imagine replacing that laser designator with a high-energy laser (HEL) weapon that emits enough thermal energy to directly render a target ineffective without using a conventional munition.

When people talk about hacking and social networks, they're not referring to the common definition of hacking, which is using malicious code or backdoors in computer networks to damage systems or steal proprietary information. Hacking into social networks requires very little technical skill. It's much more of a psychological game using information on personal profiles to win a complete stranger's trust. Facebook offer privacy settings for their users but they don t the give the users a simple...

Basic laws of thermodynamics and mechanics are used to analyse an air gun. Such devices are often employed in outdoor physics demonstrations to launch potatoes using compressed gas that is here assumed to expand reversibly and adiabatically. Reasonable agreement is found with reported muzzle speeds for such homebuilt cannons. The treatment is accessible to undergraduate students who have taken calculus-based introductory physics.

The United States is engaged in a long war against terror as a top national security priority. While initial response to the unexpected on September 2001 (9/11), terror attacks was clearly unfunded, the U.S. is still using emergency appropriations to fund ongoing operations as well as other non-emergency defense requirements. Since 2001 over $500B has been infused into defense programs and operations through supplemental appropriations, separate from funds provided through DOD's comprehensive...

China's export boom has surged Chinese share in the global export market and has created general concern as to the threat China poses to both U.S. economic dominance and to the developing economies directly competing with Chinese manufacturing. The recent focus of Chinese investment in Mexican manufacturing has generated considerable press and commentary about the danger of Chinese influence in the very backyard of the United States. Concentrating on the maquiladora sector, this paper examines...

This thesis examines the origins of the conflict which engulfed the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Findings will indicate that the violence within this culturally diverse and historically multi-ethnic region of Europe was not driven by ancient ethnic sentiments, nor was it a 'civil war' between 'traditional tribal rivals' --fighting for 'hundreds of years'--; but was rather the direct result of a within-group (intra-state/inter-cultural) political struggle. The study will demonstrate that the...

This paper involves an in-depth study of the art of command at all three levels of warfare. It examines this art through the eyes of one of Napoleon's Marshals, Louis N. Davout. The paper addresses and accomplishes three primary goals. First, it defines act of command and shows its relevance to modern day warfare. Second, the paper shows that Marshal Davout was the best of Napoleon's generals and had an art of command that rivaled the Emperor himself. Finally, the paper demonstrates how Davout...

Some revisionist historians also subscribe to conspiracy theories and believe that key...

The concept of the factors of structural safety presently applied to the design of fixed-wing aircraft can be traced back some 50 years. The last decades have brought about rapid progress in establishing aerodynamic derivatives, defining load conditions and predicting structural loads as well as enabling more detailed analyses for stress and deformation to be made. The lack of a rational basis for the factors of safety together with the progress made brought about a discussion of changing the...

This report describes an algorithm for estimating target velocity and acceleration using radar and inertial sensor measurements as inputs. In order to determine the accuracy and benefits of such an estimator, the algorithm is incorporated into a missile guidance law. Through the use of a simulation, terminal miss distances are compared with a similar missile using proportional navigation. Simulation results indicate a reduction in miss distance when such an estimate is used because of the...

This paper will outline five sets of questions on the current foreign policy of the revolutionary regime in Iran. These include foreign-policy decision-making; the Iraq-Iran war; Iran-Soviet relations; U.S.-Iran relations and the overall direction of Iran's foreign policy. None of these can be probed in depth here, but salient features of each will be summarized on the basis of my oral presentation to the Department on March 10.

The ongoing study of unexfoliated and exfoliated intercalation graphite is directed towards the understanding of its physical nature, to determine what changes take place when it is exfoliated into a low density solid, and to explore its potential as an obscurant. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used for studying the electronic levels; X-ray diffraction is used for crystallographic information, while optical reflectivity is measured to determine its spectral response. It has been...

The deterioration of brick in certain control house structures at five navigation locks was characterized by partial or complete separation of laminations from the face of several bricks. Some of the laminations had fallen completely off. Deteriorated and nondeteriorated samples were removed from several structures and were evaluated by physical testing and petrographic examination. The deterioration mechanism was identified as moisture intrusion accompanied by freezing and thawing. Six model...

An alternative to the field survey method of acquiring hydrographic data is described. The technique involves the use of digitized color aerial photography in the derivation of the percentage of reflectance of shallow ocean bottom materials. These spectral reflectance values can then be used in an algorithm for calculating water depths. The reflectances that were derived in this study show a close relative comparison to ground truth information. After a discussion of the causes of discrepancies...

This research investigated the impact of environmental (in the organizational sense) distractions, and the resulting coping behaviors, on maintenance performance. Prior research focused on investigating performance out of context, that is, in controlled environments. Maintenance personnel must not only achieve technical task completion, they must also contend with an environment that provides many distractions that may impede that task performance. This investigator spent one week at three...

In order to alleviate present and anticipated personnel shortages, the Armed Services will have to move away from the present reliance on young adults as a source of personnel. The impact will be heaviest on the technologically oriented services, such as the Navy. Previous analyses have indicated that adults in the normal working years (20-60) can meet the physical requirements of most service occupations. Questions remain about the effects of age changes in cognition on work performance of...

This report describes several research projects in organometallic chemistry. New methods are reported for preparing heteronuclear metal cluster complexes with osmium-platinum, -nickel, -rhodium, and -iron bonds. Reactions between platinum compounds and nido-carbaboranes yield new cage carbaplatina-boranes. The activation of acetylenes by nickel, molybdenum and platinum has been shown to give many novel organometal structures, and the results emphasize the role of dimetal complexes in reactivity...

One of the most fundamental problems in vision is segmentation; the way in which parts of an image are perceived as a meaningful whole. Recent work has shown how to calculate images of physical parameters from raw intensity data. Such images are known as intrinsic images, and examples are images of velocity (optical flow), surface orientation, occluding contour, and disparity. The principal difficulty with intrinsic images is that each by itself is generally underconstrained; they can only be...
