The low-speed bluff body studies conducted on aeroelastic models were extended by redesign of the installation in the subsonic wind tunnel. Improvements included stiffer support base, redesign of the spring constraint, and the use of eddy-current displacement gages; in addition, the model's lateral response data were monitored, conditioned and recorded on one-inch magnetic tape in a voltage analog form. The analog data were converted to digital form at a sampling rate of 500 numbers per second...

3-in./70 projectiles of various types, fitted with gilding metal rotating bands, have been observed to exhibit serious band wear; that is, partial or complete obliteration of the engraving of the bands recovered after firing. It was desired to investigate the effect of replacing the gilding metal with soft iron, in order to determine the results of using a material with a considerably increased melting point, and if this change would produce a band which did not fail, to determine the effect...

An investigation was carried out to determine the nature of the tensile ductility transition in recrystallized molybdenum strip of three interstitialal contents. For a fine grain size, the tensile ductility transition temperature (T sub d) and the brittleness transition temperature (T sub b) were found to approximately coincide; whereas with increase in grain size T sub d is raised and T sub b is lowered. The occurrence of a minimum in the fracture stress (sigma sub F) at T sub d appears to be...

The problem of determining the minimum of a functional is treated using the functional equation technique of the theory of dynamic programming. The problem is reduced to the solution of a system of ordinary differential equations satisfying one-point boundary conditions. The discrete case, corresponding to the minimization of a class of quadratic forms, is also treated by the same general method. A particular problem of this type arises in the treatment of the optimal inventory problem by Holt,...

In this paper the following problem was studied: Given that certain functionals of u and its derivatives belong to given L-classes over the infinite interval, what can be said about the L-classes of other functionals. Utilizing a simple device from the theory of linear differential equations, results were obtained due to Landau, Kolmogoroff, Halperin-von Neumann, and Nagy, together with some extensions.

Rate equations and enthalpic parameters were derived for use in differential thermal analysis (DTA) of polymerization reactions. General free radical polymerization kinetics are discussed and the existence of a 'stationary state' under DTA conditions was demonstrated, by comparison of a theoretical computer curve, based on stationary state assumption, with actual experimental conditions. These curves appear to be almost superimposable.

Initial static fatigue tests at liquid nitrogen temperature on single filaments of E-glass yielded incomplete data because of frost build-up problems. It became necessary to isolate the equipment from room humidity. This has been done and low temperature testing has resumed successfully, with delayed failure data accumulating at a satisfactory rate. The results so far indicate that even with the very high rates of loading used in these tests, the stress level at which most fibers will fail...

A representative survey of the literature of aerodynamic noise was made. This was not intended to be an exhaustive list but rather to give the state of the field presently. It was found that much of the research done in this field is either experimental or semi-empirical. This is primarily due to the complex nature of the theory of turbulence.

The theoretical problems involved in nucleation are being re-examined further. Theoretical computation of cluster energy using a simple molecular- pair model is being explored. The problem is to predict the thermodynamic equilibrium concentration of such clusters. This equilibrium concentration of a certain-sized cluster is related to the free energy of the cluster. The free energy of the cluster in turn involves its translation and rotation energies and also the vibration energy of the...

An earlier explanation of sunrise fading on long VLF paths is confirmed by examining data taken over a wider range of frequency and directions of propagation. It is found, however, that there is an appreciable dependence of the fading period on the magnetic direction of propagation. It is shown that this dependence is qualitatively in agreement with what would be expected from a sharply bounded ionosphere and a transverse magnetic field.

Charts of surface pressures, Mach number, and Reynolds number distributions over spherically blunted cones in an ideal gas (gamma = 1.4) are presented in the ranges M = 8 to 30 and cone half-angles 0 to 20 deg. The pressure data are correlated and compared with a previous empirical correlation of experimental data. The difference in numerical results and empirical correlation of surface pressures is attributed to the viscous-induced pressure increment in the experimental data.

Progestin-induced rapid activation of cytoplasmic protein kinases leads to selective regulation of growth-promoting genes by phospho-PR species. We have shown that phosphorylation of PR Ser81 is ck2-dependent and progestin-regulated in intact cells. Two performance measures are investigated: one is the dynamic effort; the other is the compression and shear forces on the lumbar joint. The lifting strategies are predicted with different performance measures. The joint strength (torque...

In this experiment, the DC voltage output of a magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) was measured. This was accomplished using both a broadband horn ridge antenna as a radio frequency (RF) source. Transmission frequencies ranged from 1 to 6 GHz at varied power levels of 0 to 20 dBm. The signal was received by a coplanar waveguide antenna. A MTJ rectified the RF signal to a DC voltage. Resonance was found at frequencies of 2.1 GHz and 5.6 GHz due to two different MTJ wafers used in manufacturing the...

Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride films with various Si concentrations (Er:SiN(x)) were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering followed by thermal annealing. The effects of Si concentrations and annealing temperatures were investigated in relation to Er emission and excitation processes. Efficient excitation of Er ions was demonstrated within a broad energy spectrum and attributed to disorder-induced localized transitions in amorphous Er:SiN(x). A systematic optimization of the 1.54...

The long-term goal of the REVEAL project is to develop and demonstrate a passive sonar signal processing structure that exploits available knowledge of the environment, including uncertainty, to detect, localize and classify targets. This year, a passive sonar signal processing framework was developed that leverages acoustic propagation models to localize a moving acoustic source. The algorithm was demonstrated using data from Event S5 of SWellEx-96 experiment.

Founded in 1982, RAND Arroyo Center is the United States Army's sole federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) for studies and analysis. For at least four years, the U.S. Army has been working to restore balance to a force consumed by the pressing demands of two overseas contingencies. Of perhaps greatest concern is the enduring effect on the all-volunteer force, as soldiers and their families adapt to the strains of multiple deployments, combat and its aftereffects, and a high...

This month, we continued fabrication of the Version 3.1 switches on three glass wafers. The fabrication was unsuccessful due to delamination of the sacrificial polymer, which occurred during deposition of the oxynitride structure layer. To address this and other fabrication issues, we redesigned the switch layout that included larger anchor points, gusseted spring connections, switch variations with 2x and 3x increases in the electrostatic electrode size, and a new chip with bench-style...
