This investigation focuses on mitochondrial injury in the brain and subsequent apoptosis, as a major factor in neurodegeneration. The animal model system involves the direct injection of Al maltolate directly into the brains of New Zealand white rabbits via the intracisternal route. Our hypothesis was that Al maltolate induced oxidative stress resulting in opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP) and. release of cytochrome c. This event was predicted to induce apoptosis....

The initial phases of an interplanetary space flight can be expected to place the human under a considerable amount of environmental stress. High G-forces resulting from rapid acceleration, for example, are known to disturb a number of physiological processes. To the extent that such stressful conditions reduce the capability of the human to perform normally the functions required of him in the vehicle, ways must be found to adapt the machine components to human limitations under these adverse...

This report describes the results of an experimental study of the magnetic properties of thin films prepared by chemical methods. Electrodeposition in aqueous solutions and thermal decomposition of carbonyl vapors have shown very encouraging results. Electrodeposited ferromagnetic nickel-iron films having thicknesses in the range 2500 to 3000A give reproducible results when a glass substrate is used onto which a conductive layer of gold sputtered. Film deposited on Mylar having a conductive...

A recent problem for which a solution was requested was that of the bending stresses in a thick-walled tube under internal pressure, restrained by heavy integral flanges at its ends and closed by end plates. The arrangement of bolts and the end-plate configuration were such that the flanges could rotate without restraint from the end plates. Although the radius-thickness ratio of the tube was so small that shell theory was almost certainly invalid, it was felt that, in the absence of a more...

Experimental work was aimed at developing techniques capable of growing optical quality crystals for solid state LASER applications. The scope of this program was confined to the growth of doped crystals, and in particular to Al2O3, CaF2, BaF2, PbMoO4, and CaWO4. A lack of evaluation data hampered efforts to evolve improved growth procedures throughout the program. To partially remedy this situation, data obtained on similar crystals grown under Company sponsored programs are included in an...

The problem of the stress-induced ordering of solute atoms, the so- called Zener effect, is considered. In this work the effect of the difference in solute-solvent atom sizes is considered. Starting with this size factor the tensor anelastic strain is computed. Then by the thermodynamic theory for relaxation processes, due Meixner and others, the relaxation strength, is calculated as a function of orientation. The results of the calculation suggest that the size factor is not necessarily the...

Let the binary operations and denote the arithmetic operations of addition (a b = a + b) and reciprocal addition (a b = ab/(a + b)), that is, and are the series and parallel combination rules for resistor networks. It is easy to verify that the identity (1) (a b c) ((a b) (a c) (b c)) = (a b c) ((a b) (a c) (b c)) ;olds. Furthermore if the binary operation . denotes arithmetic multiplication then the identity (2) (a b) . (a b) = a . b holds. Now suppose only that and are associative commutative...

An essentially linear relationship was obtained between the relative load (the percentage-of maximum strength) and the endurance of the manual response within the range of loads employed. As the load was increased from 50% to 80% of maximum strength, the mean endurance of manual pull de creased from 63.3 sec to 21.4 sec. A comparison of endurance scores for two arm position yielding different response strengths revealed little difference in performance despite the fact that the mean force to be...

The average speed of corrosion in the sea of the tested steels is almost identical. Consequently, alloying by small additions of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Mn does not increase corrosion resistance of the steel in the sea to a noticeable degree. Low-alloy steels differ from carbon by the fact that they corrode less evenly in the sea. This promotes a somewhat large loss of their mechanical properties (by 5--8%, as compared with Steel 3).

An attempt was made to use black-and-white infrared films as recording media for color scene information. The desired format for field use was a 5 inch tricolor striped film. In addition, their resolution proved too low for adequate modulation by a 40 l/mm carrier. The latter limitation prevented experimentation toward a striped film because the present film...

It was suggested that the function of AR in CRPC is not to turn on the same transcriptional targeted genes in the absence of androgen but to turn on a distinct set of genes independent of androgen. However, it was not clear what triggers the functional switch of AR. Here we report another pathway to bypass androgen dependency through AR ubiquitination. We found that TRAF4, a RING domain...

This paper examines the connection between these two methods, and demonstrates how formulating an econometric model as a stochastic process can be useful. The convergence of subspace iteration for the solution of eigenpairs is studied. The theoretical convergence rate is derived and is presented with emphasis on the theory in the light of practical implications. Various techniques to accelerate the convergence of the subspace iterations are proposed and are tested in a preliminary manner on some demonstrative sample problems. (Author)

Under a previous contract, a series of tests were performed in an effort to define some of the working characteristics of the 70 GHz radar and to investigate some of the problems involved with 'handover' from the radar to an electro-optical (EO) sensor system. These experiments are discussed in this report. An EO system with the desired performance can be realized with a 5 watt CW laser. With direct detection, the performance margin is low even in high visibility atmospheric conditions;...

The Eisenhower and Snell Locks were constructed between 1955 and 1958 as part of an international cooperative effort to build the Saint Lawrence Seaway. In February 1990, the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation requested that the Corps of Engineers perform a structural evaluation study of these two locks to determine the adequacy of the existing locks considering present conditions and future needs, and to determine the advisability of their rehabilitation. The study focuses on the...

This document describes the results of Phase 1 of a multi-year program intended to identify and validate tools and techniques that can be used to assist human factors engineering (HFE) practitioners during the military's normal weapon system acquisition process. Once validated, the tools will be supplied to U.S. Navy laboratories where HFE practitioners can benefit from the assistance of these tools. A detailed literature review was conducted to obtain data from previous surveys of HFE tools...

High quality, single crystalline, high-temperature superconductors were irradiated with 88.5 and 92.0 MeV electrons at various fluences to a maximum of 2.5+/- 0.5 x 10 to the 18th power electrons/sq cm. The samples were manufactured at the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston and this experiment was in support of a much larger experiment investigating the effects of various irradiations on the critical current. By introducing artificial pinning centers, such as those...

A high-resolution, multi-level, primitive equation ocean model is used to examine the response of an idealized, flat-bottomed, eastern boundary oceanic regime on a beta-plane to constant ocean thermal and wind forcing by annual mean and seasonal mean climatologies. The focus of the study is the Leeuwin current along the coastal region, from 200 S to 350 S, off Western Australia. The annual mean ocean thermal forcing in sufficient to produce a poleward surface coastal current and an equatorward...

The Naval Biodynamics Laboratory (NAVBIODYNLAB) was established as the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory Detachment (NAMRLD) in April 1971 by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED). NAMRLD was a detachment of the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory which is located at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. The initial purpose of the Detachment was to study human response to impact acceleration. In 1975, the mission was expanded to include human response to vibration,...
