Photographic portrait of Ludger J. Toussant (Toussaint) ‘20, dressed in military uniform. Ludger Joseph Toussant (also spelled Toussaint and Tousant in cemetery records) was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1896. He arrived at Middlebury in the academic year 1916-1917. He was killed in the Battle of Bellau Wood, France on July 20, 1918. He is considered to be the first Middlebury College student casualty of World War I.
