Eric P. Newman, numismatic scholar, was born in St. Louis in 1911. The Newman archives include papers from the estate of Burdette G. Johnson, a St. Louis dealer active in the first half of the 20th century. Newman further maintained personal correspondence files with hundreds of individuals beginning in the 1930s and extending into the 2010s. Newman also created research files on a variety of topics with particular focus on the pre-Federal era numismatics.
Following the success of last October's National Numismatic Collection feature presentation, this NNP Symposium we'll be highlighting the Hansen Collection. Join us for a video overview, followed by a Q&A with curator John Brush. This is a look at the Hansen Collection like you've never seen before! Presented as part of the Newman Portal Symposium, April 8-10, 2022.

Throughout his decades of research, Eric P. Newman contributed to countless different areas of numismatics. One such area was Hard Times Tokens; unofficially issued in the late 1830s to create small change for commerce, they were poorly documented. Newman solved some of the mysteries regarding this highly varied series, with a special focus on the "Am I Not a Man and a Brother" token.
